Title: Cognitive control and reward processing in substance use disorder

About the PhD dissertation

Substance addiction is a dysfunction of the brain caused by substance intake. Patients with substance addiction exhibit a range of maladaptive goal-directed behaviors, including uncontrollable, reckless, and compulsive drug seeking and use behaviors. According to the dual-system model of addiction, a disrupted state of balance between the cognitive control and the reward processing is likely to be the cause of substance addiction.

This project discussed inhibitory control in patients with methamphetamine addiction and the effects of abstinence on inhibitory and reward functioning in patients with heroin addiction through behavioral studies. And using fMRI meta-analysis techniques, the present project quantitatively revealed common features of brain mechanisms in the domains of cognition and reward in addiction. The present project suggested that abnormalities in reward processing may be more persistent in addictive goal-directed behavior compared to inhibitory control, implying that abnormalities in reward processing may be key to addiction susceptibility.

The project was carried out by Weine Dai, who is defending her dissertation on June 17th, 2024.
The defence is public and takes place on Samfundsmedicinsk Auditorium, Bygning 1262, Bartholins Allé 2, 8000 Aarhus C.
